Surgeon Traditions, Challenges, Weather and Guarantees

Great sunsets this time of year
The 2012 season has been fantastic. Adventure abounds with sturgeon present and willing anglers anxious to fill a punch card.

Sturgeon tradition has most anglers in a funk. The misconception that sturgeon fishing is better when the winter sets in is a total farce. No matter what fish you’re looking for, cold dirty water isn’t the ideal environment for fishing. Fish are cold blooded creatures and fluctuating water temperatures is a variable that has an impact on the sturgeon’s ability to feed. Shallow dirty water has a tendency to warm quicker. Tidal movement, specifically, the time of that tidal movement plays an active role in the feeding habits of these large creatures.
Get em Dick!

Weather is another factor that is really beyond my control. Launching in Benicia (9th street) puts us in a position to be able to fish in San Pablo Bay or the upper reaches of Suisun bay.  Wind greater than 7mph in the San Pablo bay is uncomfortable and with the wide open waters have no place to hide.
Up river (Suisun) is different and wind will limit the places we can fish but leave us a few sheltered areas that hold good concentrations of sturgeon.

Recently I have been asked, “Can you guarantee me a sturgeon?” The answer is NO. What I can guarantee is you will always be in an area that has sturgeon. We will point out the signs to prove that fact. We will ensure the rods are baited and in the water and we will ensure you are safe and comfortable.

The Big Fish Challenge with Captain Jay on The Right Hook was a success in my mind. We got some folks out and had a pretty good time. Jays a class act and we really worked good together on this thing. I’m looking to challenge any 6-pac boat to the same challenge as long as it’s on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

You can look at the reports and see we are indeed successful. Getting you a fish and releasing or keeping is entirely your option (within the most current regulations).

We absolutely love our fishery and our customers. Most customers are return customers and whether you’re in training or a seasoned veteran we will put you in the action. There’s more to sturgeon fishing than just luck.

The book is open and we are ready to get you a fish of a lifetime

Cared for and beautifully released!
